DAPPER BBQ - Sunday August 10th

OK dudes…it’s time to start bringin  dis shit together…we need some DAPPER bonding time outside the usual dank bar scene  to plan our expanding horizons.  I am proposing a DAPPER BBQ at my place on Sunday, August 10th where we all bring the families, friends, lovers, enemies, concubines, midget servants…and have us a good ol’ fashioned foot stompin’, beer drinkin’, square dancin’, pants hikin’, lip smackin’ good time!  I have a spacious yard in lovely Eagan with lots of room for kids and adults to run around and have a good time…maybe a little volleyball tourney?  Anyway…this was Nate’s idea so you can thank him for the good time afterwards.   I’m thinkin’ bring your own grillable items and libations and whatever else you like…and we will have lots to offer here on top of that.  How does a 3:00 start time sound?  I really hope y’all can make it…lemme know as soon as you can so I can plan accordingly.  I will give you directions as you respond.

Ghost in the Water July 18th @ The Nomad 501 Cedar Ave. S. $5

Glenn told me it was my month to pick, and the planets aligned for me to actually have a good cheap show to offer.  So these guys are friends of mine, since high school and we’re even related somehow.  That said, they are definitely the most accomplished musicians I know.  Pure genious, whether in Fitzgerald or their new project Ghost in the Water.  Where Fitzgerald was quirky folk rock meets electronic layering, GITW is almost all electronics, done in a very intentionally wierd and ironic way.  Since I don’t normally listen to this style of music, my best advice would be to go to their show and just give it a shot.  They are also quite funny people.  On my top ten for sure.

Welcome to Club Dapper!

Hey dads out there who love to rock, we salute you! This website has been set up as a place to share comments about our experiences at live music events. This social club is still in its infancy, and we are recruiting new members. Like a book club, we’ll have a revolving selection of artists and venues by each member. Check these links to learn, “What is Club Dapper?” and “History of Shows“.

ANNUALS- Friday June 13th 7pm VARSITY THEATER

I saw Annuals on Conan, liked their funky festive sound and the strange array of instruments and personnel. I am posting some of their tunes on the ftp site. Cover is $10.00. I have no idea whether or not it will sell out. It just might. Being an early show we can hang out in dinky town afterwards and Aaron can show us all where he spent his 7 years of college.

Rank Strangers @ Hexagon Bar - Saturday May 17th, 9pm

Rank StrangersThe pick for May, local indie-rock stalwarts the Rank Strangers at the Hexagon Bar. There is a bunch of openers, non of which I know anything about. Hope to see some of you there.

Mel Gibson and the Pants w/ Kill Vultures & Seawhores @ 7th Street Entry - Friday April 18th, 8PM

I’ve been waiting about 4 years to see this show, nows my chance! Come along with me to check out Mel Gibson and the Pants at the Entry on Friday Night.

Conor

In their own words:

“Equal parts underground hip-hop and electronic rock band, Mel Gibson and the Pants are rarely as hilarious as their name might imply. Instead, the band’s sound is defined by an unusual combination of aggressive bass lines, cinematic keyboard sequences, and epic guitar riffs, supported by both live and electronic beats. Rapper Harold Sanders Jr. occupies the accessory nearly as often as he does the primary role, weaving rhymes in and out of the thick web woven by his five-piece band.”

“MG and the Pants established themselves in the Minneapolis music scene with the release of their debut album, 2004’s “a mannequin american.” Since then, they’ve gathered a wide audience of music fans and artists alike. Their 2005 follow-up,”w/guitar” had them collaborating with some of the areas best rappers and musicians, including P.O.S., Eyedea, Sims, Mike Lewis, Travis Bos of Chariots and many others. MG has played shows everywhere from some kids high school graduation party in Eau Claire, WI, to the Knitting Factory in New York, NY.”

Front Porch Swingin’ Liquor Pigs - Saturday, March 22nd @ Mayslacks

pigsandpat.jpgHey all! This is the post for the March DAPPER event. This month we decided to give the pick to Nate again since we all missed his pick last month. Nate passed on his pick since he is busy with his new house purchase (congrats yo!), so the pick went to Nick, the newest DAPPER member. Well, we found out Nick won’t be able to make it either (family Easter obligations) and so Conor and I made the executive decision to make the pick on behalf of Nate/Nick. Soooo, this month’s pick is the Liquor Pigs. I have never seen them, but have heard their stuff on the radio and have wanted to check them out for a while now. Also, I am told that Mayslacks makes a mean roast beef sandwich…never been there, so I might have to head there a little early and try out the menu. So we shall see the pigs of liquor no? April pick goes to Conor on the weekend of April 19th….hope to see anyone who can make it this weekend….take it easy all you daddys and papas.

Nathan’s Pick Bedouin Soundclash (CA), Beat Union (u.k.), Westbound Train (Boston) @ Varsity Theater Tuesday, Feb. 19th

54.jpgI have heard that Bed. Sclsh is supa good live, a kind of experimental dub/reggae pop thing. Beat Union is alot like old elvis costello, the jam, power pop. Westbound Train is just good old boston ska, with a soul twist. I have a feeling that mikilu will come, as well as some other friends, so feel free to bring yo hunnies along. I think its $12 before and$14 bucks at the door and starts @ 6:30ish. Hope to see as many dappas as possible!

Galactic w/Chali 2na & Ohmega Watts- Wednesday Feb. 20th @ The Cabooze

51dpvimfjul.jpgI’m throwin this one out there as a Dapper extra-curricular event. I’ve seen Galactic twice and both times it was a spectacular show…although the second time I had to leave early since Amanda was unknowingly pregnant with Jonah and couldn’t figure out why the smoke, and excessive crowdedness was getting to her more than usual. I just gotta say, these guys are reeeeaaaallly FUNKY… The drummer, Stanton Moore, is one of the best drummers I’ve ever seen. Here’s a quote from their website (http://www.galacticfunk.com/NEW2007/index.php?skin=3) about their latest album:

With the release of their sixth album, From the Corner to the Block, the five-man group GALACTIC - drummer Stanton Moore, bassist Robert Mercurio, saxophonist/harmonica player Ben Ellman, keyboardist Richard Vogel, and guitarist Jeff Raines - reaffirms their standing as one of the funkiest outfits in the known universe. Featuring a cherry-picked guest list of some of hip-hop’s most dynamic lyricists - including Juvenile, Gift of Gab (Blackalicious), Lyrics Born, Ladybug Mecca (Digable Planets), Mr. Lif, Chali 2na (Jurrasic 5), Vursatyl (Lifesavas), and Boots Riley (The Coup), From the Corner to the Block exposes GALACTIC’s organic grooves to an urban ear while still maintaining their essential funk aesthetic.

Stanton Moore is also the drummer for one of my all time favorite groups Garage A Trois (not to be confused with Garaj Mahal) featuring the incredible Charlie Hunter on his 8 string guitar who plays bass and guitar simultaneously, and Skerik on Sax. I’m always excited when these guys come to town.

So I hope y’all are interested in joining in for this one even though it’s another $20 show and is on a Wednesday…it will be well worth it! But I have learned my lesson after the DJ Shadow sell out debacle…THIS SHOW WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY SELL OUT VERY SOON SO GET YOUR TICKETS NOW!!! Besides that, the tix are two dollars more expensive at the door.

DJ SHADOW w/CUT CHEMIST mon feb 4th@first avenue

It has been a long time since I’ve seen a hip hop type show, and there have only been three that I remember. If Dj Shadow with the Cut Chemist comes anywhere close to Run DMC in 1984, then I will be more than happy that this is my first club dapper selection. First Ave radiates so much raw energy from its battered black walls, and the funk bar will be set wicked high. Although it is monday night, don’t be surprised if this show sells out. Get tickets ahead of time if you can make it that evening. Can’t wait!
